England manager Gareth Southgate defends his decision to leave Mason Mount off the team

After missing significant time due to injury, Gareth Southgate stated that Mason Mount’s lack of match fitness was a major factor in his decision to leave the England group.

Southgate did not choose the Manchester United midfielder for England’s next matches against Australia and Italy.

The two United stars picked were Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire.

Mount had a rough start to his life at Old Trafford after his £55 million summer transfer from Chelsea, when he suffered an injury in a loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

He came back for United’s Carabao Cup match against Crystal Palace. The 24-year-old recorded an assist despite being pulled after only 45 minutes of play.

Mount has yet to play a full 90 minutes of football since returning from injury, so it is apparent that he is still rehabilitating and gradually getting back into his swing.

Despite United’s turmoil and bad performances on the field, the Englishman has been one of the team’s brightest sparks.

During a press conference, Southgate remarked on the United star’s health, saying, “Physically he’s getting back up to a level.”

We think very highly of him because of the significant role he has played for us.

However, in my opinion, he has not yet accomplished enough to put himself ahead of the competition.

In the quarterfinal match against France in Qatar, Mount made his final appearance for England.

When his team was about to be knocked out of the World Cup by Les Bleus, he came on as a substitute.
