Both of Chelsea’s starting strikers have been getting on a roll as of late. In fact, in each of Chelsea’s last three games, either Nicolas Jackson or Armando Broja has scored.
It’s been another slow start in front of goal, despite the fact that Jackson scored against Burnley and Brighton (EFL Cup) and Broja scored at Fulham.
When Christopher Nkunku recovers from knee surgery, he may be able to contribute more effectively. The France international, though, is more likely to play in the No. 10 position or in a wide position rather than up front.
As a result, there has been widespread speculation that the Blues will make additional moves during the upcoming offseason.
If rumors are to be believed, a new center forward is on the schedule. Ivan Toney, a striker for Brentford, is one target of interest for the Blues.
Toney just signed with the CAA Stellar agency, and TEAMtalk exclusively reported last week that Chelsea enjoy a cordial working relationship with the firm.
Arsenal has also been linked to the 27-year-old striker, who scored 20 goals for his club last season in the Premier League.
On January 17th, Toney will no longer be suspended for violating betting restrictions, making a move possible.
David Ornstein of the Athletic, meanwhile, claims that a new striker signing by Arsenal in January is quite unlikely.
That will leave the door open for Chelsea, and in a Q&A he published on Thursday, Ornstein emphasized the club’s likely pursuit of a striker ahead of the 2024 season.
Given that Pochettino already has two potential young talents in Jackson and Broja, both 22 years old, the new face should have more experience and a better track record in England.
In addition, Ornstein disclosed that Chelsea’s season goal is to make the cut for the Champions League.
If English clubs do well in Europe this season, finishing fifth in the Premier League could be enough to earn a spot in the Champions League in 2024/25.
However, the Blues are now ranked 11th, so they need to improve their scoring production if they want to make the playoffs.
If Chelsea wants to make a run at the Champions League, they should use the transfer window to bring in a star striker like Ivan Toney.
“There is a very good chance of this happening,” Ornstein said in response. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chelsea signed another top striker even though they already have Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja.
Although it seems unlikely right now, they are determined to make the Champions League next year.
That might occur if the team decides it needs a new goalscorer in the middle of the season.
However, as has been discussed on this same forum previously, that is easier said than done, as the current demand for prolific strikers greatly exceeds the supply.
“Chelsea will be thinking about everything, but I don’t think they’re concentrating on closing any one deal right now.”
