Even yet, the Dutchman continues to have faith in his former Ajax goaltender as his undisputed No. 1 for the foreseeable future.
The United manager let David de Gea’s contract to expire in the summer so that the Spanish goalkeeper could leave the club.
Eventually, the club spent £47 million to acquire Onana from Inter Milan.
The 27-year-old Onana criticized Harry Maguire in preseason for an error, but he has since made several blunders himself, including in the Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
Ten Hag said United passed on other potential targets including Diogo Costa and David Raya because Onana’s personality and leadership skills put them apart.
However, his results thus far have been disappointing.
Altay Bayindir, a goalkeeper from Turkey, was acquired by Manchester United on transfer deadline day for £4.3 million.
If Onana keeps performing poorly, Ten Hag reportedly would not be opposed to dropping him from the starting lineup.
However, he will continue to back the Cameroonian in the hopes that his performance will improve.
United may be without Onana for the entire month of January if he participates in the Africa Cup of Nations.
However, he apparently does not want to compete for his country.
Onana has lately been criticized by Man United icon Roy Keane for his slow start at Old Trafford.
For the podcast Stick to Football, Keane said, “He’s had a really awful start.
Being a goalkeeper for Manchester United is challenging; the ability to bounce back from setbacks and maintain a strong reputation is essential.
It has not been a good beginning for him, since he has already made a few mistakes.
“We’ve seen other goalkeepers that have come to the club with a big reputation but, after a few mistakes, there seems no way back for them.”
