Southgate had started Bellingham at No. 10 and the youngster played with an abundance of energy and assurance. He was constantly on the lookout for opportunities to damage Italy with his spin maneuvers and directness. Bellingham stood up once more as the game was lulling when he dove to win the ball from Nicol Barella on the edge of his own area, watched Phil Foden jump on it, and then took off himself.

It didn’t help matters for Italy when Phillips got away with a late stamp on Barella and only received a yellow card. As the manager likes to put it, Southgate “showed the batting order” by starting him ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson. Maguire was started in the middle of the defense instead of Marc Guéhi.
Fortunately for Phillips, Southgate replaced him with Henderson not long afterward, to a mixture of cheers and boos, which was a vast improvement over the reception Al-Ettifaq’s best received when he was taken out last Friday against Australia. There are many other positive indicators that can be tracked in Southgate.
