In a recent news release, it was announced that Stephen Curry has been awarded the prestigious title of the 2022-23 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion.

 

This esteemed annual accolade acknowledges an active NBA player’s commitment to the pursuit of social justice and the advancement of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s mission to support individuals and communities that have historically faced marginalization and systemic disadvantages.

 

Stephen Curry faced stiff competition for this honorable recognition, with fellow finalists including Chris Paul of the Phoenix Suns, Jaren Jackson Jr. from the Memphis Grizzlies, Tre Jones representing the San Antonio Spurs, and Grant Williams of the Boston Celtics. The winner of this distinguished award will be revealed during the conference finals and will have the privilege of directing a $100,000 donation from the NBA to a social justice organization of their choice. The remaining four finalists will also receive a commendable $25,000 contribution to their selected causes.

 

Notably, this award acknowledges Curry’s ongoing dedication to numerous social justice initiatives. He continues to serve as the co-chair of former First Lady Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote campaign, where he has played a pivotal role in encouraging millions of new voters to participate in the democratic process.

Furthermore, Stephen Curry’s activism extends to policy discussions, as demonstrated during the Golden State Warriors’ visit to the White House in January to commemorate their championship victory from the previous season. Curry engaged with President Joe Biden to address various policy matters and joined head coach Steve Kerr for a White House press briefing, where they shed light on community safety concerns.

 

In addition to his advocacy efforts, Stephen Curry has generously donated $6 million to support the Howard University men’s and women’s golf teams, underlining his commitment to fostering athletic opportunities for young talents. He has also opened his doors to students from the Black Culture Zone, a nonprofit organization dedicated to community development projects in East Oakland.
