Charles Barkley, known for his outspoken nature, didn’t mince words when discussing Ja Morant’s 25-game suspension. In a recent interview, the Hall of Famer addressed Morant’s situation and expressed his frustration.
“It’s baffling; he’s suspended for a gun-related incident, and not even two months later, he’s back on Instagram with another firearm,” Barkley conveyed to CNN. “You’d think the young man would have more sense.”
The NBA handed Morant a 25-game suspension in March due to behavior deemed detrimental to the league. While he can still participate in team practices and travel, he must leave arenas at least two hours before the Grizzlies’ games.
Barkley emphasized the responsibility that comes with Morant’s significant earnings, which are close to $100 million. He underlined the simplicity of the job, suggesting that it’s not like other professions, such as teaching, firefighting, policing, or the military.
“We’re not teachers, firefighters, police officers, or service members. We’re not doctors. Those are real jobs. Real jobs are held by people who may never earn substantial salaries. All you have to do is play basketball and avoid trouble,” Barkley stated.
This isn’t the first time Barkley has expressed such sentiments, as he had previously remarked in May, “Those guys are just freaking idiots… When you’re earning $100 million a year to play sports, your life changes. There are certain rules and regulations you have to live by. It’s that simple; you can’t engage in foolish behavior. That’s the deal.”
Morant is expected to become eligible to rejoin the Grizzlies on December 19 when they face the New Orleans Pelicans.
