Cherki has been noticed by the best teams in Europe ever since he scored Lyon’s first goal as a teenager, 16 years and 140 days after scoring in the Coupe de France (2019). He has since become an important player for his club, playing 110 times and missing only four Ligue 1 games in 2022–23. In those 39 games, he scored five goals.
His low centre of gravity and flashy dribbling style have made him a natural match for Chelsea star Eden Hazard. This has made Chelsea fans excited about the possibility of getting another player like the Belgian.
After spending a lot of money on Christian Pulisic and Mykhaylo Mudryk since he left four years ago, the club has had a hard time finding his replacement. But Cherki could be Hazard’s real heir at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea had been following the 20-year-old with the goal of making a permanent move, but their efforts were turned down in August.

Instead, Grosso, the manager of Lyon, left him out of the team that played. The game had to be stopped because fans throwing rocks at the team bus on its way to the Stade Velodrome. Grosso said the player is not as “special” as some experts had said, so his choice may not come as a surprise.
I knew about Rayan Cherki before he played for France Under-21s against Espoirs. Grosso told reporters at a press conference, “He has a lot of potential, and everyone hopes he can turn that potential into consistent performance.”

Martin Mosnier, a French pundit on TNT Sports, said this about the young player: “Cherki is an exceptional dribbler; one of the first things that seems to strike you when watching him is that he appears to be ambipedal, as he can seemingly use both feet equally well.” His strengths are making key plays, dribbling, and making things happen out of thin air.
Besides, Mosnier said: “He could very well become a Premier League star like Eden Hazard, but I think it’s still too early for him to leave.”
