Memphis Grizzlies the Worst Team in the NBA without Ja Morant

At the outset of the season, the Memphis Grizzlies faced the daunting challenge of “surviving” or “treading water” in the competitive Western Conference standings, awaiting the return of their star player, Ja Morant, who is suspended for the initial 25 games of the season.

As the first week and change of the season unfolded, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the Grizzlies have struggled to meet this objective. Memphis is the sole winless team in the NBA thus far, and the prospects of an immediate turnaround seem uncertain.

The Grizzlies’ performance has been so lackluster that it raises questions about whether they might be among the league’s weakest teams. After five games, the Grizzlies boast the lowest offensive rating, a defense ranked in the bottom 10, and a league-worst net rating. Apart from noteworthy contributions from Desmond Bane, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Marcus Smart, the supporting cast has failed to make a significant impact.

In addition to the absence of Morant, Memphis has keenly felt the loss of Steven Adams and Brandon Clarke, with the likelihood of both missing the entire 2023-24 season. Strikingly, it’s not unreasonable to suggest that Dillon Brooks’ absence, especially on the defensive end, has also been felt.

The pressing question now is whether Morant’s return will be the catalyst for a noteworthy change in the Grizzlies’ fortunes.
