In an ironic statement, David de Gea claims that Bruno Fernandes shouldn’t wear the armband for Manchester United after the captain’s late victory against Fulham
In an ironic statement, David de Gea said that Bruno Fernandes shouldn’t captain Manchester United after the midfield player’s late victory against Fulham.
Roy Keane, among others, has been very critical of United captain Fernandes, saying that the Portuguese player ought to be taken off the armband.
At Craven Cottage, though, Fernandes decisively silenced his detractors with a stoppage-time winner as United won 1-0.
In an Instagram post about the match, Fernandes’ old teammate, goalkeeper David de Gea, who has been linked to a comeback to United, expressed his support for Fernandes.
De Gea jokingly commented, “You are not the right captain,” along with an emoji of a zippered mouth.
De Gea seemed to be alluding to Keane’s belief that Fernandes ought to be relieved of his captaincy.
After United’s 3-0 defeat to rivals Manchester City last weekend, former captain Keane made that assertion.
“The first thing I would do is take the captaincy off him,” he stated on Sky Sports. Fernandes is not a captain material, and I realize this is a major decision.
He’s a gifted player, but from what I witnessed today, he’s always moaning, whining, and raising his arms in the air.
It’s just not acceptable. I would start with the managers since they are the ones who can make changes when it comes to where they make changes—at the board level.
“Fernandes is an excellent football player, but he’s not the kind of captain you want.”
In the summer, Fernandes was named United’s captain when Erik ten Hag decided to remove defender Harry Maguire’s armband.
Due to United’s turbulent start to the season, there are concerns regarding ten Hag’s future.
But United’s victory over Fulham was a positive step in the right way.
With United, Fernandes has scored 66 goals in 199 games since joining the team in January 2020.
Fernandes’ defense was echoed by another former United player, Nani, who stressed that the midfielder give the team his all.
“Great players already play for Manchester United.” Our man Bruno Fernandes said to Portuguese podcast 1 PARA 1 via Metro, “If Bruno Fernandes wasn’t playing well, I’d criticize him too, but for example, the sacrifice and effort he puts into the game, he does it.”
We observe it. He contributes, puts up a lot of effort, and works hard. Simply put, a lot of other people can’t keep up with it.
“оne оf the things thаt defined the club when we used tо plаy аt Mаnchester [United] wаs thаt yоu cоuld be lоsing 3-0 with 15 оr 10 minutes left in а gаme, аnd thаt’s when yоu sаw whаt mentаl strength meаns.”
