It’s extremely harsh to be expelled for looking down on the player you posted.
But that’s exactly what occurred on Wednesday to Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Antetokounmpo retrieved a misfired pass under the basket and took it all the way back for a poster dunk on Isaiah Stewart at the nine-minute mark of the third quarter at home against the Detroit Pistons.
As Milwaukee established a 73-60 lead, Antetokounmpo did a short stare-down on Stewart, but he was called for his second technical foul, culminating in his ejection.
In the pool report following the game, crew chief Rodney Mott explained the call: “After the dunk, Giannis turns to his opponent and teases him, and a taunting technical foul was called, an unsportsmanlike. And he was dismissed from the game, by rule, since he committed two unsportsmanlike technical fouls.”
Antetokounmpo had previously tallied 15 points, nine rebounds, and five assists in 22 minutes, but his absence allowed Detroit to come back and make it a game.
But Damian Lillard, Bobby Portis, and company pulled through with a 120-118 victory. With 34 points in 34 minutes, Lillard led the way.
Nonetheless, Antetokounmpo’s ejection prompted widespread condemnation across the NBA. Here are a few of the responses:
Antetokounmpo will return to action against the Pacers on Thursday in Indiana.
