Despite facing a more inferior foe in every way, head coach Roberto Martinez assembled a formidable team. Soon after the starting whistle, Cristiano Ronaldo and his colleagues used the Rheinpark match as a final practise session.
Portugal had numerous long-range attempts over the first 20 minutes, but Liechtenstein’s defence held firm. Goncalo Ramos had a great opportunity at the thirty-minute mark.
With disappointment, the PSG striker headed wide, less than six metres away. Additionally, Cristiano Ronaldo took two shots in the forbidden zone. Benjamin Buchel, the goalie, won both games.
Liechtenstein made it through to the 46th minute thanks to a collective defensive effort by the whole team. Ronaldo broke free from Diogo Jota’s through ball and scored from close range to give Portugal the lead. With his 128th goal of the year, CR7 shattered his own record for the most goals scored at the national level in history.
The Portuguese defence played erratically because of the two-goal deficit. Liechtenstein unexpectedly had a chance to cut the score in the sixtyth minute. Dennis Salanovic was still unable to put the ball in the net, even with Jose Sa in front of him.
Portugal struck the home goal twice more for the remainder of the game. When the linesman raised the flag for offside, though, Joao Felix and Ramos were both let down.
The final score is 2-0 to the away team’s advantage. After a few days off, Portugal will play Iceland in the last round of the EURO qualifiers on November 21. A winning record in the qualifying phase is what head coach Roberto Martinez and his team are going for.
