‘Unfortunate’ loss to Borussia Dortmund puts Rossoneri’s Champions League knockout-stage qualification dreams in ruins, says USMNT star Christian Pulisic, who reacts to the news.
Christian Pulisic, a standout for the United States national team, has spoken out following Milan’s devastating 3-1 loss to Dortmund, which ruined their chances of advancing to the UCL.
A miserable evening was put in motion when Olivier Giroud, a host, missed a penalty in the first minute. Samuel Chukwueze scored an equalizer just before halftime, and Marco Reus promptly converted Dortmund’s own penalty kιck. The second half, though, was when Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Karim Adeyemi secured the victory. Pulisic, a standout for the United States national soccer team, spoke after the game to American coach Jesse Marsch, who is now a commentator for CBS Soccer, on the loss of the Rossoneri to Dortmund, his previous club.
While it’s disappointing, we responded to their goal with our own and are now making a serious run. As the first half came to a close, I felt we were carrying over some nice energy into halftime. Yeah, they managed to get two thanks to a little loss of focus. I think we did a decent job of maintaining that momentum, and we had a few chances at the start of the second half that we missed. We had a bad day. They did a good job of defending and handling a few transitional situations. Clearly disheartening. As I mentioned before, there are some good things we can learn from it. The only thing we can do is concentrate on winning this last game.
If Milan want to go to the Champions League quarterfinals, they now need to win. They need PSG to lose to Dortmund in order to win, and Newcastle, still smarting after a dubious penalty call that left them tied with Paris Saint-Germain, must also lose.
Two league matches against Frosinone and Atalanta are on the schedule for the Rossoneri’s return to action. Pulisic and company will face Newcastle in their last match of the UCL group stage in two weeks, and a victory would send them home.
