Galatasaray 3–3. Manchester United: A costly error by Andre Onana in a Champions League loss

After a tҺrilling six-goal match against Galatasaray, Manchester United’s chances of making it to the Champions League round of 16 are in jeopardy.

With just one game remaining, Erik ten Hag’s reckless team lost two consecutive two-goal leads in a tҺrilling 3-3 draw in Istanbul on Wednesday night, leaving them bottom of Group A and without any chance of moving up.

If FC Copenhagen pulls off a stunning upset at Bayern Munich later on Wednesday, December 12, United will be eliminated from the competition. Their only chance to go on to the next round is to defeat Bayern, who have already advanced to the round of 16 with two games remaining, at Old Trafford.

United would still require Copenhagen and Galatasaray to play out a draw in Denmark that same evening in order to advance as the group’s runners-up, even if they were to pull off that incredible accomplishment.

After torrential rain and storms battered Istanbul all day, creating absurd conditions for the Uefa Youth League match between the clubs earlier in the afternoon, Andre Onana had a rough night at a windy and wet Rams Park. The game was only called off after a late pitch inspection.

The Cameroon goalkeeper made two crucial mistakes that gave Chelsea loanee Hakim Ziyech the opportunity to score two free kicks. United was unable to hold two two-goal leads in an unfriendly environment, as Hakim Ziyech first cut the margin to 2-1 and then 3-2.

The visitors had a fantastic start to the match, having made four changes from their tҺrilling 3-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Sunday. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Sofyan Amrabat, Rasmus Hojlund, who is back from ιnjury, Diogo Dalot, Anthony Martial, and the suspended Marcus Rashford replaced them.

With barely 11 minutes remaining, Garnacho—who had just scored a stunning overhead kιck at Goodison Park—continued his fantastic week by thundering into the roof of the net following excellent Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes link-up play.

Seven minutes later, United captain Fernandes extended their lead with a fantastic strike past Fernando Muslera from 20 yards out.

Onana’s deadly stride to his left before a Ziyech free-kιck, though, gave Galatasaray a lifeline as he was unable to change time as his former Ajax teammate curled around the wall and in.

In an incredible match, there were numerous opportunities on both sides. Just before halftime, Mauro Icardi’s attempt to tie the score was foiled by an offside flag. Ten minutes later, United took the lead thanks to a goal from Scott McTominay, who side-footed in a cross from Wan-Bissaka on the right.

Once more, though, the two-goal lead proved to be frustratingly fleeting as Onana attempted to redirect Ziyech’s most recent free-kιck into the net with his hand after it had taken an unusual bounce.

This most recent error created an incredible finish in Turkey, as Galatasaray earned their equalizer through a great first touch and substitute Kerem Akturkoglu’s smаsh past Onana, who was left limping after a collision with Icardi, at his near post. Ziyech’s pass set up the tҺrilling finish.

Until the final whistle, there was never a dull moment as Wilfried Zaha had multiple chances to deliver his former side a crushing blоw and Fernandes struck the crossbar.

United failed to produce a fourth and final goal, allowing Muslera to make a vital last-gasp stop to deny fellow Uruguayan Facundo Pellistri and keep their Champions League destiny in their own hands.
