Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has been subpoenaed to testify in the lawsuit related to his incident with Joshua Holloway last summer, according to Lucas Finton of The Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Morant and his friend Davonte Pack were involved in a physical altercation with then 17-year-old basketball player Joshua Holloway over a pickup basketball game. Morant’s lawyers acknowledge that Morant hit Holloway, but they claim it was in self-defense, the central focus of the ongoing lawsuit.
Morant’s legal team has been granted permission to argue self-defense in civil court, a recent update in the case. Morant’s testimony is expected during a three-day hearing to determine if he would be granted immunity from the lawsuit under Tennessee’s stand-your-ground law.
The law was ruled applicable to the case by Shelby County Circuit Court Judge Carol Chumney in mid-November, and the hearing on whether Morant acted in self-defense is scheduled for Dec. 11 through Dec. 13.
While no criminal charges remain for Morant or Pack, as Pack’s were recently dropped, and Morant was never criminally charged, lawsuits persist on all sides. Morant’s subpoena marks the latest development in the ongoing case stemming from an incident last summer between Morant, Pack, and Holloway.
