The Milwaukee Bucks upset the New York Knicks 146-122 on Tuesday, led by 63 points from Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, to advance to the NBA’s in-season tournament semifinals.
The Bucks defeated the Knicks with a devastating scoring run in the third quarter at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum, moving on to a last-four matchup with the Indiana Pacers in Las Vegas on Thursday.
With 35 points, Antetokounmpo led the Milwaukee scorers, followed by Lillard with 28, scoring five of seven from three-point range.
Antetokounmpo finished with eight rebounds and ten assists.
For Milwaukee, double figures were scored by Malik Beasley (18 points), Khris Middleton (14), Bobby Portis (13) and Cameron Payne (12).
Meanwhile, Antetokounmpo was encouraged by a performance that offered additional proof that the breakout collaboration between the former NBA Most Valuable Player and new summer addition Lillard is beginning to click.
In reference to his on-court rapport with Lillard, Antetokounmpo stated, “Game by game we are getting more comfortable.” “There are numerous games in front of us.
We’ll grow more at ease with one another as we play more minutes.
“We’re playing to win, so sometimes we’ll play well and sometimes we won’t, but ultimately, I believe that him and I are setting the tone for the entire team.” It’s a pleasant sensation.
Julius Randle led New York with a 41-point performance, and Jalen Brunson contributed 24 points to the victory.
But following Milwaukee’s scoring explosion in the third quarter, the Knicks were constantly trailing in the game.
After 15 lead changes in the opening quarter, Milwaukee managed to take a two-point lead at 37–35. The Bucks continued to battle hard in the second quarter, leading by just three points at the half (75–72).
However, the Bucks started to score baskets at will in the third quarter, and Antetokounmpo poured in 13 points to help the top seeds establish an insurmountable lead. This turned the tide of the game in Milwaukee’s favor.
With one minute left in the third quarter, Portis made a 15-foot jump shot to give Milwaukee an 18-point lead. New York was unable to go closer.
After Donte DiVincenzo’s running layup early in the fourth quarter put Milwaukee up 112-103, the Knicks mounted a comeback to cut the deficit to nine points, but Beasley’s back-to-back three-pointers soon restored Milwaukee’s double-digit lead.
Midway in the fourth quarter, a three-pointer by Payne gave Milwaukee a 20-point lead, and the team easily won to secure their final four berth.
With the victory, Milwaukee advances to play Indiana on Thursday in the round of four, where a spot in Saturday’s Las Vegas championship will be up for grabs.
