Pistons vs. Grizzlies: Two struggling teams facing similar challenges

This matchup serves as the “consolation” phase of the In-Season Tournament for teams that didn’t qualify for the main event. While the criteria for determining the matchups may be unclear, it seems likely that both teams are considered underperformers.

The Grizzlies have faced unexpected challenges this season, notably missing key rotation players due to injuries (Luke Kennard, Brandon Clarke, Steven Adams, Jake LaRavia, and Marcus Smart) and the suspension of Ja Morant. Despite being a team that has been competitive in the Western Conference in recent seasons, their depth is being severely tested this year.

Memphis is currently grappling with adversity to the extent that they’ve signed Shaq Harrison and Jaylen Nowell on 10-day hardship contracts. Nowell even started for them in a recent loss to the Suns, underlining the team’s struggles.

The lone bright spot for the Grizzlies this season has been Desmond Bane, who has elevated his game after securing a substantial contract extension in the offseason. Although there were initial doubts about the extension, Bane has justified it, averaging 23.8 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.4 rebounds. While his shooting percentages, particularly from beyond the arc, have dipped, it’s understandable given the increased offensive burden he’s shouldering in the absence of key players.

Jaren Jackson Jr. has faced challenges in adapting to the increased offensive responsibilities. While his scoring has risen, his shooting percentages have suffered, with a field goal percentage of 42 and a three-point percentage of 28. Additionally, his shot-blocking numbers have declined significantly from last season.
