Get back on the field! We need to see the magic again bro! Jesse Lingard is working out at home
Manchester United, according to Danny Murphy, need to fire Erik ten Hag immediately if they want to salvage the season.
Danny Murphy, a pundit and former Liverpool player, has said that Manchester United must immediately fire Erik ten Hag if they wish to restart their season.
“If United want to dine at English football’s top table again, Ten Hag is not the manager to take them there,” the commentator said in his Sunday piece for The Mail.
The talkSPORT commentator stated his belief that under the leadership of the Dutchman, Ten Hag’s team will not be able to compete with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal. He expressed his belief that no squad can improve off a strong first season. I spy one that’s going backwards.
Even if we are still far from mid-December, his reasoning is sound: United have lost eleven times this season, most recently at Old Trafford against Bournemouth.
The former midfielder made the observation that the club’s difficulties are magnified when fans simply shrug their shoulders when Manchester United suffer a home loss to a team like the Cherries.
Despite the manager’s claims to the contrary, Murphy conceded that “many of the problems at United lie above and beyond him” and that other players should “look at themselves in the mirror” to take responsibility.
But the ex-Crewe Alexandra man said that since Ten Hag took over in 2022, he has had a huge impact on the club’s recruiting, and thus far, none of the acquisitions have been successful. Although this may be unfair to Lisandro Martinez, none of last season’s heroes—including Christian Eriksen and Casemiro—have performed up to expectations, suffering from setbacks like injuries and rumors of leaving the club.
The acquisitions made this season have also been disastrоus. Whenever Mason Mount has played, he has seemed out of character due to his chronic injuries. Andre Onana has struggled mightily, while Rasmus Hojlund has yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League despite his impressive play in Europe.
Murphy further asserted that the team is uninspired and poorly guided tactically. He complained that United were “cut wide open and too easy to play against” in every match he watched. Every time they play a competent team, they come out on the losing end.
Though he did give Ten Hag credit for being named Manager of the Month, the ex-Liverpool player claimed that the team’s victories against lower-tier opponents “masked clear problems.” He said Chelsea’s win “papered over the cracks” and had more to do with the Londoners’ personal problems than with Manchester United’s improvement.
Murphy speculated after United’s loss to Bournemouth that Ten Hag may be let off if Liverpool suffered a heavy defeat. Based on current developments, the analyst now doubts that the manager will make it to the end of the season, despite his earlier forecast to the contrary.
I think a change needs to happen now and let a new management figure out what he needs to do if they want to go to where they want to be, he asserted.
Although the Dutch coach is kind, the former England international said that the opportunity to oversee United’s superstars came too quickly for him when managing Ajax. Murphy said that Ten Hag was incompetent because he was learning on the job and couldn’t handle the strеss of running such a massive club.
Even while the talkSport analyst did qualify his statement by saying, “it’s clear this manager isn’t the right man for United,” the Old Trafford side should only fire him if they have a strategy.
Many United supporters disagree with Murphy’s gloomy оutlооk and believe that firing Ten Hag will not solve the club’s problems, even though he has underperformed. Who knows what the Manchester club will do now that the INEOS partial buyout has cast a shadow.
