On Monday, December 18, prior to their matchup with the New York Knicks, the Los Angeles Lakers revealed that they will raise a banner in celebration of winning the NBA’s first-ever In-Season Tournament.
The team declared that they will introduce a special In-Season Tournament banner that adds a year to commemorate the first-ever victory in 2023. Should the Lakers win more In-Season Tournament titles, those years will be added to the single banner. The banner will differ in shape and color from the Lakers’ championship banners. The Lakers wish to recognize their victories in the in-season tournament while maintaining a clear line between them and true titles, as they have consistently stated that they will only raise banners for NBA titles.
In addition, the league revealed that Tyrese Haliburton, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis were all selected to the All-Tournament team. As a result, both players will be honored before to the game.
Together, they helped the Lakers achieve a perfect 7-0 record and win the first-ever NBA Cup.
With an average of 23.3 points, 14.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.0 steals, and 2.9 blocks in 33.9 minutes, Davis played in all seven of the Lakers’ in-season tournament games. He also shot 52.5 percent from the field and 79.6 percent from the free-throw line. Against the Indiana Pacers in the championship game, he was very impressive with 41 points, 20 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks. With 102 total rebounds, he won the tournament and finished second with 20 blocks.
James averaged 26.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.6 assists, 1.6 steals, and 56.8 percent field goal and 60.6 percent three-point shooting in 30.7 minutes over seven In-Season Tournament games. With a +116 plus/minus, he had the best plus/minus of any player in the tournament and was awarded MVP.
The Lakers may have been persuaded to fly a banner by the league after winning it all, as they had not previously chosen whether to do so. In any case, this seems like a fair compromise that allows the Lakers to celebrate their In-Season Tournament victories while simultaneously emphasizing that they are not the same as a true championship.
The In-Season Tournament victory means a lot to Reaves.
Although some fans have minimized the significance of winning the In-Season Tournament, the players obviously take great pride in it. Reaves talked on how much winning the NBA Cup meant to him as a competitor.
It has great significance. I’ve talked a lot about it. The ability to shed light on children who experienced similar circumstances as I did during my childhood. You know, not many people leave my small town of 1,100 people when they graduate from high school. They may attend college, remain there, and work there for the rest of their lives until they find employment in the community where you live.
“But simply being able to demonstrate to children that you can follow your dreams and that no matter what they are, you shouldn’t let anyone tell you that they can’t be achieved.” When I was rushing around school telling everyone I wanted to play in the NBA, I probably got a lot of strange looks. I couldn’t care less what they said. In any case, I was simply going to pursue that.
