Following his POTY victory, Chelsea great Drogba said to Napoli’s Osimhen, ‘Long live the new King’

The best player to ever do so applauded the Nigerian international as he formally became the continent’s top football player.

Didier Drogba, a former striker for Chelsea, has joined a large group of people in congratulating Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala, two Nigerian footballers who were named the greatest players in Africa on Monday night, according to Soccernet.ng.

Osimhen won the 2023 CAF Player of the Year award. His goals helped Napoli win the Scudetto for the first time in 33 years and enabled Nigeria to advance to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Suρer Eagles attacker defeated Egypt and Liverpool forward Mo Salah and Morocco and PSG defender Achraf Hakimi to win Nigeria’s first Player of the Year award in 24 years.

In a same vein, оshоala wоn the title оf Best Wоmen’s Player in Africa fоr a recоrd-breаking sixth time.

In his acceptance speech for the prize, Osimhen referred to Drogba as his role model once more.

The Ivorian icon also praised Osimhen and Oshoala as the new faces of African football on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

“Happy birth to the newly crowned African King and Queen, @victorosimhen9 @asisat_oshoala @caf_online.” Drogba wrote, “Congratulations, my Nigerian People! We will be waiting for you in January @afcon_2023.”

Along with praising Osimhen, Drogba issued a challenge, saying that Ivory Coast was eager to play Nigeria in the January 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria and the tournament hosts, the Ivorians, were placed in the same group.

Osimhen would have the ideal opportunity to make an impression and guide the Suρer Eagles to their fourth continental trophy—and their first in more than a decade.
