Following the release of a video showing LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers entering USC’s arena during the playing of the national anthem and promptly finding a seat, UFC star Colby Covington joined the chorus of people criticizing James.
As he gets ready to face Leon Edwards in a welterweight match at UFC 296 this weekend, Covington spoke on Wednesday night.
“Leave this country if you detest America so much and don’t like the place that gave you a billion bucks. or come work with me. Visit China. At a news conference, he declared, “Go to these sweatshops where you employ all these laborers, use these women, and pay them pennies on the dollar to make your millions.”
“You’re fired, LeBron James. You’re a timid person. You’re a b—- and a coward with no backbone.”
The footage showed James entering USC’s Galen Center in Los Angeles with his younger son Bryce and two of Bryce’s Sierra Canyon High School classmates was uploaded on X on Sunday by Orange County Register reporter Luca Evans. James was seen in the video entering the arena as the national anthem was playing. He was present to witness his son Bronny’s debut following a summertime cardiac arrest.
Users of X noticed that James did not take off his hat, as is typical for the national anthem, but instead sat down in his chair as soon as “The Star-Spangled Banner” began to play on the speakers. Towards the conclusion of the video, he finally stands.
James came under fire right away for supposedly having “zero respect” for the United States and for disliking the nation since he chose not to stand for the national anthem.
Evans responded to the criticism as soon as the video gained popularity.
“As the reporter who took this video, this is gross and completely mischaracterizes the situation,” he wrote in a post on X. “During Bronny’s tenure at Sierra Canyon, LeBron performed this for YEARS. It’s unquestionably the ideal moment to enter so he doesn’t create a huge commotion. Put an end to it.”
