Bradley Beal sprained his ankle during the Phoenix Suns’ Friday night loss to the New York Knicks, according to head coach Frank Vogel. X-rays came back negative, but Beal’s return to the field is not scheduled.
In the opening quarter, Beal exited the game after jumping up to attempt a jump shot and landing on Knicks defender Donte DiVencenzo’s heel.
Before going to the locker room, Beal stayed to shoot a free throw. Before leaving the game, Beal had accumulated six points and one rebound in five minutes.
In his first five games with the Suns, the former star of the Washington Wizards has averaged 16.4 points and 4.0 rebounds.
On the play, DiVincenzo was given a flagrant 1.
Due to a back injury, Beal has missed a total of 19 games since the start of the season.
Following his most recent month-long absence from the court, he returned on Tuesday and scored 30 points in back-to-back games against the Brooklyn Nets and the Golden State Warriors.
The Suns entered into a three-team trade for Beal in the off-season with the intention of assembling a Big 3 that included Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Beal.
Due to unfortunate injury luck, the Big 3 have not yet established themselves.
A right calf strain that Booker sustained earlier in the season caused him to miss nine games, including the first three that Beal played for the team.
After that, Durant sprained his ankle, which prevented him from playing on Tuesday during Beal’s second injury comeback.
After playing together for less than a quarter of the Big 3’s second game of the season against the Nets on Wednesday, Beal sustained another injury.
Phoenix’s season debut has been lackluster, in part due to that unfortunate string of injuries. The Suns have a 13-11 record overall and have lost five of their last seven games coming into Friday’s game after going on a seven-game winning streak in November.
The Suns’ depth in the backcourt will be put to the test by Beal and Eric Gordon’s combined injuries (right lower leg soreness), so the team will be relieved that Grayson Allen, who recently missed three games due to a right groin strain, was able to play on Friday. With Beal sidelined, Allen will probably play more minutes.
