Onana was included in Cameroon’s 27-person roster for the event on Thursday. The competition begins on January 13.
If he and his nation get to the final on February 11th, he might miss as many as six United games, including the FA Cup third-round match against Wigan Athletic.
Almost all Premier League players participating in the Asian Cup or AFCON are departing from their clubs to reunite with their nations on New Year’s Day.
The stars of Cameroon will get together in a pre-season camp in Saudi Arabia. On January 9, they will play a friendly match against Zambia. Six days later, they will go to the Ivory Coast to play their opening match against Guinea.
Onana, whose attendance at the event has always been uncertain, is reportedly making an effort to forego the warm-up camp, according to ESPN.
The goalkeeper reportedly wants to be available for the January 8th match against Wigan and is in discussions about it with the FA of his nation.
With his Red Devils career off to a very rocky start following his £47 million summer transfer from Inter Milan, Onana is anxiоus to spend as little time away from Old Trafford as possible out of concern that he would lose his starting spot.
That is improbable, though, given that the 27-year-old has participated in every minute of United’s campaign and because Erik ten Hag hasn’t even allowed backup keeper Altay Bayindir to play in the Carabao Cup.
Onana returned to international action in September after parting ways with manager Rigobert Song during the World Cup in Qatar last year.
In the past, Ten Hag expressed his lack of concern over losing Onana to AFCON, stating, “We have a strong group of keepers with Bayindir and Tom Heaton so we are comfortable.”
Naturally, we want Andre to be available as much as possible, but in his absence, we have two capable keepers who can step in.
In related news, Tunisia’s tournament lineup has surprisingly left out United sensation Hannibal Mejbri.
