Despite the returns of Derrick Rose and Luke Kennard, the Memphis Grizzlies suffered a resounding defeat at the hands of the Sacramento Kings. As they closed out 2023 with a blowout loss of 123-92 at FedExForum, the game quickly became one-sided in the second half.
The Grizzlies struggled with their shooting, managing only a 37% field goal percentage and a lackluster 30% from beyond the arc. Jaren Jackson Jr. led the team with 18 points, but it was not enough to turn the tide in their favor.
On the other side, Domantas Sabonis of the Kings delivered an impressive triple-double performance, contributing 13 points, 21 rebounds, and 12 assists. Malik Monk also had a standout game with 27 points, while De’Aaron Fox added 24.
Although the first quarter saw a back-and-forth battle, the Kings took control of the game in the second quarter, leading by 12 at halftime. They extended their dominance in the third quarter with an 8-1 run, firmly securing their victory.
However, amidst the disappointment, there were some positives for the Grizzlies. Luke Kennard made a successful return from a knee injury, showcasing his skills with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 5-for-8 from beyond the arc. Furthermore, Derrick Rose made his comeback, allowing the Grizzlies to have most of their rotation players back for the upcoming year.
Looking ahead, Memphis (10-22) will face the San Antonio Spurs at home on Tuesday, hoping for improved fortunes in the new year.
