Ja Morant Makes a Triumphant Return: The Importance of Constructive Criticism for Athletes

On December 19, 2023, Ja Morant made his much-anticipated comeback for the Memphis Grizzlies after serving a 25-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. Prior to his return, the Grizzlies’ performance had been lackluster, and Morant’s absence was keenly felt. However, his suspension served as a necessary consequence for his transgressions, and now he is back, better than ever, much to the delight of many.

As a columnist, I sometimes critique sports figures, but it is always with the intention of uplifting our community and demanding more from each other. In the lead-up to Morant’s return, it was evident that he had learned from his mistakes. One can appreciate his growth and understanding, especially considering the scrutiny he faced. Not only did he express contrition upon his return, but he also came back with a renewed determination.

Since Morant’s return, the Grizzlies have embarked on an immediate four-game winning streak, and as of now, they hold a 5-3 record. This is a clear improvement, even though Morant recently had to cope with an illness that affected his performance. In sports, there is a saying that “winning cures everything,” and through his exceptional play, Morant has been able to leave his past errors behind him.

This kind of dedication and self-improvement can change the narrative surrounding any chosen craft. When you can set aside your ego, acknowledge your shortcomings, and take the necessary steps to rectify them, a weight is lifted off your shoulders. You can then focus on becoming the best version of yourself once again. Morant’s comeback serves as an excellent example for others who may face career setbacks in the future.

Now, I am by no means the arbiter of morality, but I firmly believe that it is our responsibility as Black individuals to challenge one another to be more aware of our identities and the image we want to project in this world. It is understandable for young Black athletes to lose sight of this at times, but it is commendable when they begin to grasp the bigger picture. While it may not be an ideal situation, being Black in this country requires awareness and effort to improve the systems and conditions we live with.

If more people could receive constructive criticism in the manner that Morant has, many athletes would benefit greatly. He deserves credit for his positive actions, especially when we are vocal about his or others’ missteps. Here’s to a productive remainder of the season for the Grizzlies, and perhaps even a play-in/playoff appearance. Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: if Ja Morant has anything to do with it, the team is in good hands.
