The left back agreed to a season-long loan to Borussia Dortmund when he signed a new contract, but his clause won’t start to activate until June.
This past weekend, the defender made his Bundesliga debut, starting and playing the whole match in a 3-0 victory over Darmstadt.
Maatsen, who signed with Chelsea in 2018, has played in 15 Premier League games for Mauricio Pochettino’s team this year, although he has only started one.
That occurred during a 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace, the Blues’ London rivals, last month.

This season, Mauricio Pochettino has only started the 21-year-old once in the Premier League.
The Chelsea team was severely affected by injuries, especially in the left back position, and the 21-year-old found it difficult to get game time.
The Blues are hoping that more playing time at the Westfalenstadion will help him progress or, at minimum, raise his price.
