‘Vidic’s shape’: For Manchester United, Diogo Dalot’s heroic defensive performance was ‘worth as much as a goal and three points’

Following United’s victory over West Ham, Diogo Dalot’s outstanding defensive play was praised by supporters. Dalot sensationally blocked a strike from Jarrod Bowen.

While one-on-one with Andre Onana, the Portugal international ran backwards to block Bowen’s low drive, which went against all artistic principles. His daring leap in front of the shot earned him the praise of Red Devils fans, who deemed his effort “as good as a goal” when he outpaced Harry Maguire, who had been caught under the lofted ball that had released Bowen.

“That is insаne from Dalot,” exclaimed one ecstatic admirer. Impressive tackle! One more person commented, “Dalot can blоw hоt and cold, but when he’s on it, he’s on it!” Another person added, “Unbelievable defending from Dalot.” What a brilliant defense.

Rasmus Hojlund, who is celebrating his birthday, had scored in four straight matches, and Alejandro Garnacho put United up 2-0 before the remarkable block.

Minutes later, Garnacho scored again to put the game away and give United the win; as a result, they moved up to sixth place in the league, passing West Ham. Having said that, they trail fifth-place Tottenham by six points and are eight points behind the top four.

Out of all United players, Dalot is one who has flourished under Erik ten Hag. The 24-year-old has surpassed Aaron Wan-Bissaka to become the starting right back for the club, starting all but one Premier League match this season.

He joined Manchester United from Porto in 2018 and immediately became an integral part of the team, although he was benched halfway through the season when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho. In 2020, he went on loan to AC Milan, but when he returned the following year, he quickly reestablished himself in United’s first team setup.

Currently, the defender has over 130 appearances with the Red Devils, five goals, and a number of last-ditch tackles that could be considered goals.
