Over the last two seasons, Chelsea have spent a lot of money to improve their midfield alternatives. Last summer, they shattered the British transfer record once again by signing Brighton’s Moises Caicedo in a deal which might exceed £115 million. They also spent a massive £107 million to acquire Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in January 2023.
Additionally, Chelsea have spent more than £50 million on Romeo Lavia, while Lesley Ugochukwu joined Chelsea from Rennes for £23.5 million.
In spite of those significant trades, Chelsea is still looking to bolster their midfield. Caicedo has had a rough time of it recently, and Carney Chukwuemeka, Lavia, and Ugochukwu are all out with injuries.
Also, in an effort to bring the books in order, Chelsea may be compelled to sell Conor Gallagher, an important player for Pochettino. The deal would be considered a financial gain for Gallagher because he is a graduate of the Chelsea academy.
The Blues are considering a move for Vitinha, a player for PSG, due to these reasons. Chelsea have reportedly been “long-term admirers” of the 24-year-old since they first took an interest in him while he was playing for Porto. While on loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 2020–21 season, Vitinha gained experience playing in England.
Vitinha failed to persuade Wolves to extend his loan, even though they had the option to do so.
Chelsea eyeing VitinhaBut he persisted, and in 2021–22, the Portugal international had a wonderful season with Porto, earning a £34 million transfer to PSG in July 2022.
Vitinha is flourishing in Paris under Luis Enrique’s tutelage, thus PSG will demand a hefty transfer fee before releasing him. However, Chelsea will still likely sign on the dotted line since co-owner Todd Boehly has proven time and time again that he is prepared to spend big to obtain the players he wants.
Chelsea are reportedly interested in a number of midfielders, including Vitinha and Newcastle star Guimaraes.
The way Guimaraes has adjusted to life in the Premier League since joining Newcastle in January 2022 has left a lasting impression on Chelsea’s upper management.
True, the Brazilian has become a major player for Eddie Howe’s squad, and it would be devastating for Magpies fans if he left.
Yet, in order to meet Financial Fair Play regulations, Newcastle may be need to sell one or two of its top players this summer. Although Newcastle have set their price tag at a stunning £100 million, this could present Chelsea with a chance to get Guimaraes in a game-changing summer transfer.
A transfer war between Chelsea and Liverpool could break out if the Blues decide to go all out to sign Guimaraes. It was revealed in early February that Liverpool is really interested in signing the 26-year-old.
Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona, Manu Kone of Borussia Monchengladbach, and Khephren Thuram of Nice are among the midfielders being tracked by Chelsea. Manchester United were unsuccessful in their pursuit of de Jong in the past.
