During All-Star Weekend 2024, NBA star Anthony Davis presented a private screening of the emotionally charged film “Finding Tony” at the Imax Theatre in the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. With the assistance of producer Billy Goodson and director Raven Magwood Goodson, the movie delves into themes of mental health and the journey of childhood.
The event welcomed a diverse audience, including representatives from groups like 100 Black Men of America and local chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Notable figures such as Erica Banks and David Bell of the Cleveland Browns graced the red carpet to witness the special screening.
“Finding Tony” tells the story of Tony Greene, a former NBA star battling alcoholism and haunted by the tragic loss of his loved one in a home invasion eighteen years prior. The devastating event plunged him into depression and led to his departure from professional basketball.
His best friend, Dr. Terrence Daniel, attempts to help Tony turn his life around by guiding the Lincoln Community College women’s basketball team. It is during this time that Tony encounters Destiny, a seventeen-year-old orphan with a tough exterior and impressive basketball skills. Although they clash at first, Tony recognizes Destiny’s talent and potential. His newfound purpose in coaching the team brings hope to Destiny and helps her break down her emotional barriers, setting both of them on a transformative path.
Prior to the movie screening, Raven Goodson and Anthony Davis participated in a Q&A session moderated by local figure ASHMAC. The positive reception and success of “Finding Tony” were acknowledged by Prevent Child Abuse America, who recorded the film’s acclaim. The movie is set to release in the spring of 2024, and fans can stay updated by following @findingtonyfilm on Instagram.
