Reportedly, Fluminense has “been in contact with him every week” in preparation to sign Thiago Silva, whose contract with Chelsea is due to end later this summer.
After four years as one of Chelsea’s most valuable players, the 39-year-old may be calling it quits under Mauricio Pochettino’s tutelage. He joined the club from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020.
Since he and Chelsea had not yet reached a new contract agreement, Silva stated in January that he was “relaxed about the future” and that his career was imminently coming to an end.
According to Fluminense’s sporting director Fred, president Mario Bittencourt considers him a “dream signing,” thus this may be really exciting news for him.
“Thiago Silva has been a dream of ours for a long time. The president [Bittencourt] talks to him almost every week,” stated Fred, Fluminense’s sporting director, in an interview with ESPN Brasil. While representing Brazil, Silva had a two-year stint with Fluminense. The first was as an academy player, and from 2006 to 2009, he was back with the first team.
Before joining AC Milan, the center back played 97 games for during his second stint.
‘Thiago has a deal in England,’ Fred chimed in. He has our support. As a friend of his and an admirer of his character, I wish him nothing but the best. There are plenty of opportunities for him to come back here, he knows that. Nothing is [about to happen].
Avoiding pressuring Thiago is of the utmost importance. Everyone from the fans to Thiago himself adores Fluminense.
However, Fred went to the extent of stating that Silva’s return to his previous club was “inevitable.”
“The players’ and the club’s desire is that it happens as soon as possible, but we know that it will happen eventually.”
Bittencourt provided more clarity on the club’s ability to sign Silva in an interview with ESPN Brasil, while he expressed hope that he would return.”It is more his doing than ours,” the president remarked. However, Silva has already stated that he will go back to his own country once his contract expires. He should definitely return.
With 22 starts in 26 Premier League matches and three goals in all competitions, Silva has been an invaluable asset to Pochettino’s team this season. However, reports indicate that the west London club is interested in acquiring Nottingham Forest defender Murillo, thus he may depart from the Blues this summer.
In response to a question about returning to Brazil, Silva told Hayters TV, “I don’t have anything scheduled for later, I’m just looking to have fun.” This suggests that Silva isn’t overly worried about his future.
Even though it’s nearly over, we don’t consider it over just yet. Choose the appropriate time. It gives me confidence to keep going because I can still keep up a decent performance and my numbers are good. The future is now in God’s hands.
I’m completely at ease with the idea of seeing what happens after these four months if everything goes well.
