Bronny James, son of NBA superstar LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, intends to enter the NCAA’s transfer portal following one season at USC, as reported by basketball journalist Dick Weiss. James’ anticipated move away from the Trojans coincides with the departure of Andy Enfield, USC’s head coach, who accepted the same position at SMU. Enfield had coached USC for 11 seasons. Despite the team’s talent, the Trojans concluded the season with a 15-18 record (8-12 in Pac-12 play) and failed to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
In his debut freshman season, James participated in 25 games and made six starts. He maintained an average of 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists, with a shooting percentage of 36.6% from the field. James was absent for the initial eight games of the Trojans’ season due to a sudden cardiac arrest he experienced during the team’s offseason workouts in July. Upon his return, he played under a minutes restriction.
He made his debut against Long Beach State and dropped four points with three rebounds, two assists and two steals. James also looked just like his father on a blocked shot, chasing down his opponent from behind to swat it away.
James has faced elevated expectations since his time at Sierra Canyon High School in Los Angeles. As a four-star recruit out of high school, he garnered attention, with On3 ranking him as the 25th prospect in the nation for the 2023 class. There were rumors that James might consider declaring for the NBA Draft after a successful freshman season.
James still hasn’t made his intentions known, though entering the transfer portal could point to him wanting to get a fresh start somewhere else in college.
