Klay Thompson made history with a 25-point performance, setting two franchise records, but despite their 123-116 win over the Utah Jazz in the regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon, the Golden State Warriors couldn’t climb higher than 10th place in the Western Conference standings.
With a record of 46-36, the Warriors needed assistance from either the New Orleans Pelicans or the Portland Trail Blazers to avoid landing in the final play-in position in the West. However, neither team came through for them. The Los Angeles Lakers secured the No. 8 seed with a victory, while the Sacramento Kings claimed the No. 9 spot with a win and a tie-breaker advantage over Golden State.
Now, the Warriors are set to face the Kings in an elimination game on Tuesday to kick off the Western play-in event. Golden State opted to give Stephen Curry and Draymond Green a rest on the verge of the playoffs, and limited Klay Thompson to 20 minutes of play. In that time frame, Thompson managed to make 6 out of 12 attempts from beyond the arc, leading all scorers in the game.
In the process, he boosted his season scoring tally against Utah to 118 points, surpassing World B. Free’s record of 115 points for a four-game season series established in 1980-81. Additionally, Thompson’s six 3-pointers brought his total to 22 for the season against Utah, eclipsing the previous record he shared with Curry by five.
The Jazz concluded their season with a 31-51 record, marking their second consecutive absence from the playoffs. In a game where the majority of Golden State’s regular players were on the bench, the outcome was determined in the final 4:10 of play. This period began with Utah holding a narrow 114-113 lead following a three-point play by Luka Samanic.
However, the Warriors surged ahead with a 10-2 run to close out the game. Gui Santos secured the lead for Golden State with two successful free throws at the 3:48 mark, and Jerome Robinson contributed five of the team’s final eight points, including a crucial three-point play with 1:29 remaining.
Santos finished with 13 points and Lester Quinones added 12 among the group that sealed the victory for Golden State. Andrew Wiggins, starting the game, contributed 19 points, while Dario Saric chipped in with 12.
Jonathan Kuminga returned from a bruised tailbone that sidelined him during Friday’s loss to New Orleans, leading the Warriors in assists with seven despite not scoring in his 23 minutes on the court. Brandin Podziemski led the team in rebounds with nine.
Keyonte George led the scoring for Utah with 21 points, while Omer Yurtseven achieved a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
Additionally, Taylor Hendricks contributed 16 points, Luka Samanic and Brice Sensabaugh each scored 14 points, while Kira Lewis Jr. and Micah Potter added 13 and 10 points respectively. These players all reached double figures for the Jazz, who aimed to conclude the season with a three-game winning streak.
