LeBron James’ tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers may depend greatly on the team’s actions in the upcoming off-season, with perhaps no decision carrying more weight than the potential selection of Bronny James.
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, James aims to continue playing for two more seasons, the Lakers are keen on retaining him, and they are also eyeing the possibility of integrating his son into the organization through this year’s NBA Draft.
LeBron James has voiced his desire to share the court with his son, Bronny, but after the Lakers’ early exit from the NBA Playoffs, he acknowledged that he cannot control his son’s future.
“At the end of the day, the young man will decide what he wants to do and how he wants his career to go,” James said, shifting his perspective. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski noted that the notion of father-son play isn’t at the forefront of LeBron’s mind anymore.
Despite this change in priority, the Lakers should still consider using their second-round pick to draft Bronny. This move could bolster the chances of LeBron staying with the team for the remainder of his career. According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Lakers are eager to have LeBron back on any terms he desires, including a significant financial offer.
While LeBron’s decision could involve pursuing players like Trae Young or Klay Thompson in the offseason, bringing Bronny into the fold could complement those efforts. Although LeBron may not insist on playing with his son as strongly as before, his initial mention of it suggests its importance to him.
Bronny faced challenges early in his collegiate career, recovering from a cardiac arrest attributed to a congenital heart defect. If the Lakers draft him, they understand that he requires significant development. However, acquiring Bronny would demonstrate the organization’s commitment to keeping LeBron and striving for championships.
On the court, such a move could rejuvenate the Lakers, as LeBron’s scoring prowess and playmaking abilities could bolster their title aspirations.
