According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Golden State Warriors are still considering trade options for veteran point guard Chris Paul in light of the team’s contract decision.
“The Warriors, league sources say, have continued to explore their trade options with Paul’s trade-friendly contract in conjunction with Wednesday’s draft as well as the prospect of pushing the Friday deadline into July if Paul is amenable to that amendment (as covered here previously),” Stein stated.
For the 2024–25 season, Golden State has until Friday to determine whether to exercise Paul’s $30 million team option.
In his 19th NBA season, Paul averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game, mostly as a substitute.
Even if his contributions on the floor have decreased, head coach Steve Kerr still wants to keep him around because of his leadership qualities.
“Chris has excelled in both his leadership and on the court. He is among our top players. I adore working with Chris (Paul). Alder Almo of Heavy Sports said that Kerr stated, “I sincerely hope we bring him back next year.”
Kerr may not be able to fulfill his ambition to keep Paul, though, as Golden State searches for a possible trade this week. After missing the playoffs this season, the Warriors are hoping to reopen their championship window, and improving their backup point guard would probably help them achieve that aim.
Paul, an aging former star, is still chasing his first championship. Should his time in Golden State come to an end, he probably wants to join a Finals team, either through a trade or free agency.
