Giannis Antetokounmpo, who finished with 23 points and helped Greece defeat Croatia 80-69 on Sunday, is making his first trip to the Olympics. One of the four men’s basketball qualifying competition finals was taking place to decide which teams would make it into the 12-team Paris Games field.
“The Olympic Games feature the world’s top athletes,” stated Antetokounmpo. “There is nothing for us to lose. We have a great team, and I think we can do something truly amazing.
Greece, led by Georgios Papagiannis with 19 points, and Nick Calathes with 14 points, qualified for the Olympics for the first time since 2008.
Qualifying is a great first step, so that’s extremely fantastic, Papagiannis remarked. “We want to do something really good at the Olympics.”
Greece’s opening-round opponents in Group A of the Paris Games will be Australia, Canada, and Spain, who qualified on Sunday as well by defeating the Bahamas.
The previous entrants were the reigning champions USA, France, Germany, Japan, Serbia, South Sudan, Canada, and Australia. The other seven countries on the list qualified based on their results at the World Cup previous summer; France qualified as the host nation. There were 24 teams remaining to fight for the final four spots following the World Cup. The winner-take-all qualifications that began last week determined them. On Sunday, Brazil claimed the top spot, followed by Greece and Spain. Later on Sunday, when Lithuania travels to Puerto Rico, the final slot in the 12-team Olympic field will be determined.
In the semi-finals on Saturday, Antetokounmpo faced Luka Dončić, another enduring NBA All-Star. Greece and Antetokounmpo defeated Dončić’s Slovenia 96-68.
“They performed far better than we did. Dončić remarked, “They were far more aggressive.” “I believe their team is outstanding. They obviously have Giannis. However, other components are also crucial to them. They also have excellent coaching. They were superior to us today.
