France defeated Japan 94-90 in the Paris 2024 men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday thanks to Matthew Strazel’s game-tying four-point shot and Victor Wembanyama’s eight points in overtime.
Strazel’s off-balance 3-pointer and foul with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter may have forced OT. The 17-point guard buried the next free-throw to save France from the cliff.
Wembanyama, who had 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists, scored France’s first eight overtime points for a 92-84 advantage.
Japan scored after Yuki Kawamura’s 3-pointer with 34 seconds left. Another Makoto Hiejima shot trimmed the score to 92-90, but eight seconds were not enough for Japan to win.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Japan’s top scorer Rui Hachimura was ordered to depart on his second unsportsmanlike foul with 25 points. Kawamura had 29 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
Germany trounced Brazil 86-73 on Tuesday, matching France’s 2-0 record in Group B. Japan and Brazil are 0-2.
The world champions will play France in the last group stage round after Dennis Schoroder earned 20 points.
Canada defeated Australia 93-83 in Group A, while Greece dropped their second straight to Spain 84-77.
Australia dominated for majority of the first quarter, tied three times and holding a 28-26 lead against Canada.
The second quarter was tighter, with four ties and multiple lead changes before Australia went to the locker room 49-45.
Canada finally led 72-70 in the third quarter, and a 9-0 surge in the fourth quarter gave Canada its first double-digit lead, 83-72 with 4:29 left. Australia never caught up.
RJ Barrett led Canada with 24 points and 7 rebounds, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks each had 16. Jock Landale had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Australia, while Josh Giddey had 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
